As soon as Adam Kay set foot on a hospital ward for the first time, he realized there's quite a lot they don't teach you at medical school ...His diaries from the NHS front line - scribbled in secret after long nights, endless days and missed weekends - are hilarious, horrifying and heartbreaking by turns. This Is Going to Hurt is everything you wanted to know about being a junior doctor, and more than a few things you really didn't. And yes, it may leave a scar.

  1. Superb read

Posted by Louise on 25th Jan 2018

    Never wanted it to end.

  2. Outstanding and timely memoir

Posted by Hayley Lord on 11th Sep 2017

Adam Kay's 'This is going to hurt' recounts the six years the comedian spent working as a junior doctor (working his way up from house office to senior registrar).
His memoir is by turns incredibly funny and extremely sad, moving and full of pathos.
Kay resigned his role in 2010 following a catastrophic incident. His account of the incident and its impact are distressing and very sad.
This reviewer started the book last Friday at 10am and didn't stop until it was finished. An outstanding memoir which stays very much in your mind.
