THE FIRST BOOK IN THE GRIPPING THURSDAY MURDER CLUB SERIES BY TV PRESENTER RICHARD OSMAN

In a peaceful retirement village, four unlikely friends meet up once a week to investigate unsolved killings.

But when a local property developer shows up dead, 'The Thursday Murder Club' find themselves in the middle of their first live case.

The four friends, Elizabeth, Joyce, Ibrahim and Ron, might be pushing eighty but they still have a few tricks up their sleeves. Can our unorthodox but brilliant gang catch the killer, before it's too late?

WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING ABOUT THE THURSDAY MURDER CLUB

'A superb debut. Thrilling, moving, laugh-out-loud funny and packed with characters you will want to see a LOT more of' Mark Billingham

'Compelling. Mystery fans are going to be enthralled' Harlan Coben

'Smart, compassionate, warm, moving and so VERY funny. I smiled a million times. This book will make a lot of people very, very happy' Marian Keyes

'Funny, clever and achingly British - what else would you expect from a book by Richard Osman?' Adam Kay

'A warm, wise and witty warning never to underestimate the elderly' Val McDermid

'What a joy! Full of brilliantly observed humour, spot-on dialogue and twists and turns aplenty. Joyce and the gang are now my favourite crime-solving team' Nina Stibbe

An excellent read: intriguing plot, light, humorous, acutely observed, poignant, well written and beautifully resolved.

    A bit depressing

Posted by Leigh Moss on 28th Feb 2021

75 per cent of this book I found depressing. Everything I read was bringing my dislike of retirement homes to the fore and what potentially lay ahead in our Twilight years. The remainder of the story was certainly interesting with twists and turns that had me engrossed. I was brought to tears in sections that dealt with love and death. Not a heartwarming, enjoyable read but certainly memorable, caring and satisfying.

A touching tribute to the humour and smarts of those who've 'lived a bit'...

Posted by Keely B on 10th Feb 2021

Written in snappy, smart dialogue and a wry observational tone, with short, keep you guessing chapters, this book (apart from being quite an intricate 'who the hell murdered each murderee' storyline) is a joy from start to finish. Starting and ending with a Joyce, in fact.
The respect and admiration for the older generation poors out of every paper pore and makes you laugh out loud at regular intervals. It reminded me a lot of the humour of Belinda Bauer in her crime novels, only with a higher average age quotient.
The idyllic Kent countryside comes alive with the investigations and ruminations of The Thursday Murder Club, so chosen due to room availability at the upmarket retirement village the plot revolves around.
I loved the little moments of wrong-footing which never lasted long but were so nimble; deft touches that made you wish you were clever enough to have seen it coming but then rather glad that you weren't because it was making the ride all that more enjoyable.
That the characters were all so lovable makes the cry for a sequel inevitable and the last pages of the book comforting you with the knowledge that 'it's already on its way'.
Bravo to Mr Osman and all his acknowledged helpers - this is a novel for anyone who loves the quirks of being human. Pretty much everyone, then.

A brilliant page-turner. Funny sad and gripping I was sad to finish it. I am already looking forward to the second book.
