WINNER OF THE CILIP KATE GREENAWAY MEDAL

From bestselling Landmarks author Robert Macfarlane - a gorgeous, illustrated collection of spell-poems to re-wild the language of children.

All over the country, there are words disappearing from children's lives. These are the words of the natural world - Dandelion, Otter, Bramble and Acorn, all gone. The rich landscape of wild imagination and wild play is rapidly fading from our children's minds.

The Lost Words stands against the disappearance of wild childhood. It is a joyful celebration of nature words and the natural world they invoke. With acrostic spell-poems by peerless wordsmith Robert Macfarlane and hand-painted illustration by Jackie Morris, this enchanting book captures the irreplaceable magic of language and nature for all ages.

    Beautiful book

Posted by Lincoln mama on 29th Jul 2018

This book is gorgeous, I love the concept behind it, the illustrations are beautiful and the large format makes it extra special. I've bought it for my daughter's 6th birthday, she calls herself Nature Girl as I know she will treasure it forever. The price.on A Great Read with free delivery can't be beaten.

    Too beautiful!

It was supposed to be a gift for kid’s birthday but I flipped through it and liked it too much! So ended up keeping it for my children! They love it!

    Stunning

Posted by Unknown on 5th May 2018

Beautiful book with gorgeous illustrations. I believe the concept is to celebrate 20 nature words which have been controversially culled from the Oxford English Dictionary, on the basis that they are no longer common currency amongst children. The actual poems also contain wonderful alliteration and uncommonly used words (furled, frond...) that my 6 year old has loved reading. I'm about to purchase it again for a christening gift.

    Beautiful Book

Posted by Unknown on 15th Apr 2018

A book for children and adults alike. I bought it as a present for a 50th birthday now I want a copy myself. The illustrations are captivating as is the text...and there is the fun element of identifying the words in the jumbled letters.

    Wrong title

Posted by Sarah on 1st Jan 2018

This book was certainly not what I expected. The title indicates words long gone out of use. To the contrary they are all in use. The only thing that I appreciated was the illustrations, I just wish I had checked it out in a bookshop before sending for it rather than taking note of reviews. As we live rurally nothing was new to us.
    Sorry would not recommend

    The Lost Words

Most excellent book; can't rate it highly enough. Beautiful illustration and text. I bought this to read and look at with my grandchildren to keep them in touch with nature - something that seems lost in some adults these days.
