My Life - A Balancing Act [9781839521294]

(No reviews yet) Write a Review
From humble beginnings, Norman Hibbert s achievements and life experiences far exceeded his own modest expectations. Norman grew up dodging doodlebugs in bombed out Hanworth, Middlesex, left school with no ambition or qualifications to speak of and did factory work prior to National Service. An interest in the gym became a passion, and as a result of hard work, dedication, discipline and some chance encounters, he became a world renowned hand balancer. Together with his wife Sylvia (Miss Universe), Norman became part of the Runnymede Crowd and the Physicality movement. During the 1960s and 70s, the Hibbert s balancing act, The Zeetonns, performed all over the world in countries as far-flung as Japan and Hong Kong. Norman and Sylvia also worked the British clubs alongside famous names such as Tommy Cooper, comedy acrobats Ted and Hilda Durante (Jay Aston of Bucks Fizz s parents), Ruby Murray and Dave Allen. During quiet times The Zeetonns worked as extras in many notable films and Norman was a stuntman in You Only Live Twice and stand-in on Day of the Jackal where he recalls a charming encounter with actor Edward Fox. After retiring from show business, Sylvia went on to teach and Norman worked in a local gym and for NABBA, later to become Secretary. In 1998, Norman and Sylvia Hibbert were presented with an award for Outstanding Contribution to Physical Culture by the Oscar Heidenstam Foundation. These entertaining memoirs travel nostalgically and fondly back through memory lane, recalling a bygone showbiz era. A fascinating, gentle, often comical read, A Balancing Act is a tribute to Sylvia, who sadly passed away tragically and suddenly in 2015 and is also a testimony to the art of hand balancing. Norman, soon to be 87, is still going strong and can be seen performing the odd one-handed balance at his local Sandhurst gym (on a good day), where he continues to work out three times a week and has become rather a local legend.
