He has worked in a variety of academic roles at universities in Australia and the United States. McGuigan is an associate editor for the Journal of Australian Strength and Conditioning, Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research, and International Journal of Sports Physiology and Performance. He was the research and innovation coordinator for the New Zealand Silver Ferns netball team from 2009 to 2015.
