It’s still only November, but we’re already thinking about what books to buy as Christmas gifts.

There’s nothing quite as nice as receiving a well-chosen book from someone, or knowing that you’ve given the perfect book to a loved one, and we wanted to help you choose from all the thousands of new (and classic) titles out there.

So here are some AGR suggestions for gifts that will put people into a state of Christmas reading bliss

Whether you’re an expert or a beginner, there’s a book for you about almost every medium you can imagine!

Harry Potter Knitting MagicNew Patterns from Hogwarts & Beyond marries the world-of Harry Potter with the craft of knitting. It’s packed with incredible projects, including clothing, accessories, and decorations. Aimed at anyone who can knit, there will be something for you to try, whatever your skill level or experience.

And of course, you’ll be in the fine company of some of our top Olympians, who love to knit!

The first book in this series - Harry Potter Knitting Magic - is also still available:

Nick says “This is the perfect gift for my mum as she loves all things Harry Potter and recently took up knitting during the lockdown last year. I hope she will take the hint to knit me my own Weasley Christmas Jumper!”

Prefer Star Wars to Harry Potter? We’ve got something just for you!  Star Wars: Knitting the Galaxy: The official Star Wars knitting pattern book will teach you how to create all kinds of cute and cuddly characters and clothing from a galaxy far, far away.

Bargello: A Modern Guide to Needlepoint is an introduction to the needlecraft technique of Bargello. Aimed at anyone who wants to learn, or someone who’d like to improve their skills, it has clear colourful illustrations and instructions, and a variety of projects to try. Choose from pot plant covers, decorative wall hangings, cushions, bags, lampshades and more!

If traditional embroidery is what you’re looking for, the Jane Austen Embroidery book has a selection of beautiful projects to be executed with needles and silks, inspired by the work of Jane Austen. There are clear patterns to follow, and comprehensive instructions for stich formation and techniques.

Making a handmade wardrobe is something most of us can only dream about, but if you (or someone you know) is keen to start stitching their own clothing, check out the Tilly and the Buttons range. These clear, practical guides include clothing patterns so you can get started creating your unique look.

The Great British Sewing Bee is as popular as ever, too, so either of their technique books would make a great gift for a dressmake (or aspiring dressmaker.)

And if you’re slightly less confident, and want to brush up on some sewing basics, there’s The Sewing Book, a very useful guide for someone who’s keen to begin sewing from scratch.

Lucy says “I might get one of these for a friend – they are creative, and love to sew. They’d enjoy making up these dress patterns for themselves or their children.”

Colouring books have been a huge help to many people over the last 18 months, fostering mindfulness and creativity. We have a range from Johanna Basford and Millie Marotta, both of whom design complex and beautiful images to be coloured. Check out our newest items HERE

Lucy says “A couple of these books and a nice set of colouring pens or pencils will make a perfect present for a friend who’s been finding the last few months difficult. I hope they can relax and enjoy losing themselves in the fantasy worlds in these gorgeous illustrations.”
